
Why are we learning this?”
Most teachers have heard this question at least once this week.
And honestly, students ask it because they want learning to feel connected to real life. That’s why sustainability education matters so much right now. It gives classroom learning purpose. It helps students see how science, languages, Math, technology, and even art connect to the world they live in every day.
The Erasmus+ project “Transformative Pedagogy for Sustainability Education, Digital Innovation, and Future Competences” focuses on exactly this idea: helping schools move sustainability from posters on the wall into everyday learning experiences.
A Classroom That Feels Alive
But here’s the good news for busy educators:
You do not need to redesign your entire curriculum.
Sometimes sustainability starts with the smallest classroom moments.
What Does Sustainability Look Like in a Real Classroom?
It can look like:
- a student asking why classroom lights stay on during lunch,
- a discussion about fast fashion during an English lesson,
- comparing food waste data in Math,
- or students creating posters about saving water instead of another worksheet.
Students engage more when they feel the topic affects their actual lives.
Think about your own classroom for a moment:
- How many plastic bottles do students bring every day?
- How much paper gets thrown away each week?
- How often do students talk about climate anxiety or “the future”?
They are already thinking about these issues. Schools should help them process these questions constructively.
Students Remember What They Experience
Most students will probably forget a definition copied from the board.
But they will remember:
- planting something themselves,
- debating a real issue,
- solving a local problem,
- or realizing their daily choices actually matter.
That is where sustainability education becomes powerful.
Not when students memorize facts about climate change —
but when they start asking:
“What can we do about it?”
And honestly, those are the kinds of conversations many classrooms need more of right now.
